Aaron's Staff - Resurrected From The Dead

A dead stick brought back to a fruitful life.

Numbers 17:4-5, 8 Place these staffs in the Tabernacle in front of the Ark containing the tablets of the Covenant, where I meet with you. 5 Buds will sprout on the staff belonging to the man I choose. Then I will finally put an end to the people's murmuring and complaining against you.

8 When he went into the Tabernacle of the Covenant the next day, he found that Aaron's staff, representing the tribe of Levi, had sprouted, budded, blossomed, and produced ripe almonds!

My study of the Old Testament has taught me a lot about priest and their special calling to serve God and his people. One of the ways that God set his people apart from other cultures was in his rules for worship.

It seems that worship has always included sacrifice, ancient cultures around the world offered sacrifices to their "gods" long before the Levitical priesthood. Even in the Bible there are examples of priestly roles being performed by ordinary men. (Cain and Abel, Job, Melchizedek, Noah, Moses)

But when God chose a people (the nation) he also chose a people (the priest) to lead them in worship and to be his ambassador to mediate for his people. Unfortunately God's people would challenge his decision to use a particular group of men to be their religious leaders.

Man Wants To Be In Control

In my recent post about Korah's rebellion we saw that Korah wanted more privileges than God allowed, he had a special God given job in the Tabernacle but he wanted to get a promotion. But it wasn't just Korah, he was able to convince a group of men to follow his ideas instead of following God. (Numbers 16:1-11)

God already made his choice and told his people that Aaron’s descendants were set apart for the priesthood “forever, from generation to generation.” But that wasn't good enough to keep Aaron's position from being challenged by the men that served under the priest. 

Man has always wanted to be in control of his life even if that means worshipping God in a way that God doesn't want. Being in control didn't work out well for Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:1-24) or for Abraham and Sarah but we still struggle with the same temptation today. (Genesis 16:1-16)

Miracles Confirm That God Is In Control

God's reaction to Korah's rebellion made it clear that he is in control and if you rebel there may be severe consequences. But after his wrath and justice is revealed his people still don't get it. God will give his people another lesson about his desire for the priesthood.

This time God teaches his people in a softer response that demonstrates his grace and mercy. The people will get an object lesson, a visual that should help them to remember that God is in control.

God told Moses to place a bunch of dead trees (walking sticks) in the Tabernacle so that God can prove to his people that Aaron is the High Priest. The other sticks had the name of the tribe on them but Aaron's staff had his name on it so that it was crystal clear that he is God's choice from the tribe of Levi.

So many dead sticks sitting in the same environment but only one came back to life!

A dead stick doing something that only a a live stick can do while it is still attached to a tree is a miracle that only God could do. Aaron's staff was the only one to produce buds but God took it a step further and proved the buds were for real by having some of them produce fruit.

God had to be in control of every detail in order for this visual lesson to work, the buds and blossoms was pretty amazing but even the fact that the staffs were sticks from an almond tree is not a coincidence.

God's people would have remembered the golden almond buds and branches of the golden lamp that God told them to make for the Tabernacle. Without sunlight, the golden lamp provided the light that is needed in the darkness of the Tabernacle o that the priest could do their work. (Exodus 25 and 37)

Jesus Is The Light

John 1:4-5,9,18 The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.

9 The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

18 No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father's heart. He has revealed God to us.

The light that shined in the Tabernacle was a picture of better things to come. Jesus was the true light, fulfilling the lamp's symbolism but expanding it's reach as the greater light of the world. 

God wants all men from around the world to worship him, Jesus’ light extends universally, offering salvation and truth to all people that will culminate in Heaven where "the Lamb is its lamp” (Revelation 21:23).

Jesus Is The Branch

Isaiah 11:1 Out of the stump of David's family will grow a shoot- yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.

Zechariah 6:12-13 Tell him, 'This is what the LORD of Heaven's Armies says: Here is the man called the Branch. He will branch out from where he is and build the Temple of the LORD. 13 Yes, he will build the Temple of the LORD. Then he will receive royal honor and will rule as king from his throne. He will also serve as priest from his throne, and there will be perfect harmony between his two roles.'

Aaron's dead branch that produced fruit was a picture of something far better. The tree like lamp and the branch of Aaron's staff are a symbol of the promised Messiah that came up from a stump that was presumed to be dead.

The promised Branch that would produce an amazing amount of fruit had a lowly starting point in our world. Born in the disappearing lineage of King David in a small town to a humble family without status or renown yet he rose to become a "hero" in his day.

But he would lose all of his followers and finish his life even more lowly and humble than he was at the start. All of his fans would disappear as opposition grew against him, he became despised, rejected, betrayed and crucified.

How ironic that The Branch would be hung on a dead tree!

Ephesians 2:1,4-5 Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. 4 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God's grace that you have been saved!)

What a paradox! The life giving Branch hung on a lifeless tree but unlike the dead wood of the cross this dead wood came back to life and turned his defeat into victory for my benefit. The dead Branch would come alive in a greater way than Aaron's staff ever did. 

In God's wisdom, the source of our physical life was put to death on a dead tree to also be the source of our spiritual life. Without Jesus I was just as dead as Aaron's staff that could not produce fruit. But if I become a part of the life giving vine that the Branch offers then I can also be used by God to produce fruit. (John 15:1-16)

Thank you Lord for making this dead man come alive. I pray that my life will produce righteous fruit that proves that I am alive physically and spiritually. (Galatians 5:22-23, Philippians 1:11)

Rejecting The Power Of God

Mediators are necessary because of God's power and our rebellion.

Numbers 16:1-2 One day Korah son of Izhar, a descendant of Kohath son of Levi, conspired with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, from the tribe of Reuben. 2 They incited a rebellion against Moses, along with 250 other leaders of the community, all prominent members of the assembly. 

Numbers 16:39-41 So Eleazar the priest collected the 250 bronze incense burners that had been used by the men who died in the fire, and the bronze was hammered into a thin sheet to overlay the altar. 

40 This would warn the Israelites that no unauthorized person-no one who was not a descendant of Aaron-should ever enter the LORD's presence to burn incense. If anyone did, the same thing would happen to him as happened to Korah and his followers. So the LORD's instructions to Moses were carried out. 

41 But the very next morning the whole community of Israel began muttering again against Moses and Aaron, saying, "You have killed the LORD's people!"

Over and over again, God's people have rejected his sovereign rule in their life. We have already seen that God's people have rejected the pleasures of God and they have rejected the promises of God and in the last post we saw that God's leaders rejected their ministry that God blessed them with and desired more than he allowed.

A small group of men were able to get 250 followers to united against Moses and Aaron and demand better positions. And now there are the 250 bronze incense burners that belong to nobody.

The men also demanded that there be consequences for a lack of leadership in Moses. Why did God give them a leader that couldn't get them to "a land flowing with milk and honey." Where is our new home? Where are the fields and vineyards? (16:13-14)

Everything that was wrong with their situation was somebody else's fault. The entire trip from Egypt to the edge of the Promised Land was full of signs and wonders to help them learn that God is in control and he loves and wants to bless his people. 

Being in this wilderness at this point isn't God's idea, they rejected God's exit strategy then they rejected God's leaders and now they are rejecting God's power. (14:1-4) 

God Shows His Power So They Will Know

Numbers 16:30 "But if the LORD does something entirely new and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them and all their belongings, and they go down alive into the grave, then you will know that these men have shown contempt for the LORD."

Moses shows great wisdom over and over again in Numbers 16, Moses says "the Lord will do something powerful and then they will know" over and over again. The Lord came through, he showed his power but sadly the people did not learn.

First God's people made Moses their excuse for not being in the Promised Land and now they blame him for the death of God's people. God's grace and mercy are coming dangerously close to an end

The power of God could not be more obvious and it couldn't be any more ignored. When you think they have learned their lesson, think again, it never took them very long to forget and lose their fear of God and his power.

Man Rebels Against God's Power

Numbers 16:41-42 But the very next morning the whole community of Israel began muttering again against Moses and Aaron, saying, "You have killed the LORD's people!" 

42 As the community gathered to protest against Moses and Aaron, they turned toward the Tabernacle and saw that the cloud had covered it, and the glorious presence of the LORD appeared.

43 Moses and Aaron came and stood in front of the Tabernacle, 44 and the LORD said to Moses, 45 "Get away from all these people so that I can instantly destroy them!" But Moses and Aaron fell face down on the ground.

God’s people ignored His power to conquer the Canaanites and claim the Promised Land. They ignored His power again when He judged 250 rebels. Now, they seem blind to the danger of their own demise.

Moses and Aaron understand the situation, the power of God is coming against his people, Moses command to Aaron helped to affirm Aaron's role as the High Priest as God's wrath is turned away from his people.

It is difficult to understand that some people received the benefit of Aaron's work as High Priest while 14,700 people died before Aaron could get busy to save the rest. (Numbers 16:47-50)

Mediators Are Necessary

The Israelites stood at the edge of the Promised Land, yet they doubted God’s power to defeat the Canaanites. They rebelled again during Korah’s uprising, ignoring God’s authority, and now 14,700 more perish.

Yet, in His mercy, God used Aaron to intercede, as he rushed to offer incense. This act affirmed Aaron’s role as High Priest and revealed God’s heart to save. But Aaron’s work was only a shadow of something greater that was needed, something that could fully bridge the gap between sinful humanity and a holy God. 

That’s why we need Jesus, our perfect Prophet, Priest, and King. As our Prophet, he reveals God’s truth; as our Priest, he offers Himself as the ultimate sacrifice; as our King, he reigns over all creation (Hebrews 7:27).

Thankfully, God’s power to judge is matched by His power to forgive. The story of Numbers 16 points us to Christ, who saves us from our endless rebellion which started way back in Genesis 1. 

Today, reflect on this: Are you trusting in Jesus as your Mediator? Thank God for His grace, which provides a way to peace with Him!

The Rule Of God With Us

God's people are longing for an eternal kingdom with a righteous ruler.

Isaiah 9:6-7 For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

7 His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the LORD of Heaven's Armies will make this happen!

God with us should be a glorious thought that is too wonderful to describe, in the past couple of post we saw The Hope of God With Us and The Peace of God With Us, It is amazing that God would come to be with us and give us hope and peace. But God's story doesn't end there, he is going to bless his people even more when he returns to reign on earth.

We all long for a better country that is ruled by a better king, but for most of us that is just a crazy dream, it may be crazy for the rest of the world but it is reality for God's people. The day is coming when God will setup his kingdom and tear down the kingdoms of this world that stand in opposition to him.

God's people are always waiting for God's timing.

God's people have a long history of waiting, a lot of God's promises seem like they will never happen, don't forget that there are more prophecies of Jesus second coming than there were of the first so we can be sure that The King Is Coming (music video). 

When Jesus finally arrived to be God with us the first time, there was nothing to fear, as a baby he was defenseless, as an adult he was gentle and kind. Jesus had power over everyone he met but he only used his power to reveal his deity in a gracious and merciful way for our benefit so that we would believe. (Philippians 2:5-9) 

Jesus second advent will not be the same, anyone that wasn't prepared for the first advent could either carry on business as usual or they could have their life radically changed, either way there wasn't any devastating consequences. When he comes again it will be totally different.

The Eternal King And His Kingdom: 

 

The characteristics of the king:

• Wonderful Counselor - Every other counselor will be gone as the supernatural wisdom of this counselor will be far superior. We exaggerate and overuse "wonderful" so we need to pause and consider it's true meaning. Jesus is wonderful in a way that is truly boggling to the mind. (Jeremiah 23:5, Romans 11:33, Colossians 2:3)
• Mighty God - Powerful enough to return after 3 days in the grave and powerful enough to defeat every evil and restore his kingdom to the state it was in before it became marred by sin. (Deuteronomy 10:17, Nehemiah 9:32, Psalm 50:1-6)
• Everlasting Father - The only source of compassion and care that God's people will ever need. They have a peace treaty with the mighty God so they can enjoy being in his presence for eternity without fear. (Isaiah 63:16, John 10:28-30)
• Prince of Peace - God's people should strive to live at peace with each other but as Jesus told his disciples his first advent wasn't about bringing peace. The conflict that we see in the New Testament continues, Jesus is a polarizing figure, the spiritual battle is not over yet. (Matthew 10:24 and 2 Corinthians 6:14-16) Some day the peace that God's people have with him will finally be enjoyed with each other and with all of God's creation. (Romans 12:18, Ephesians 4:1-3, Philippians 4:6-7, Hebrews 12:14)

The characteristics of the kingdom:

Isaiah 11:3-5 He will delight in obeying the LORD. He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay. 4 He will give justice to the poor and make fair decisions for the exploited. The earth will shake at the force of his word, and one breath from his mouth will destroy the wicked. 5 He will wear righteousness like a belt and truth like an undergarment.

Isaiah 11:10 In that day the heir to David's throne will be a banner of salvation to all the world. The nations will rally to him, and the land where he lives will be a glorious place.

The kingdom of God will be the true creation of the "holy land" where love, justice, peace and joy are the norm. The prayer of Jesus for "thy kingdom come, thy will be done" is a summary of God's kingdom. When the kingdom comes it will be God's will done on Earth as perfectly as it is in Heaven.

The new Heaven and new Earth will not have the destructive influence of sin, man's rebellion will be overthrown and Satan will be bound. The whole story of the Bible is about our rebellion against the king and his work to bring us back under his reign.

When Jesus returns as king: 

• The new kingdom will be known for God, his presence will be all that we will ever need for eternity.
• The new king will obviously be the promised heir of King David's throne. Nobody will question who he is or why he is reigning.
• The old king of this world will be dethroned and the devastating consequences of his evil empire will be reversed and the earth will be restored.
• The promises made to Israel and all of God's people through the prophets will finally be realized and the people of every nation will be blessed. Every covenant God has made with man will be 100% fulfilled.
• The Promised Land will finally belong to Israel, all of it, the boundaries of the nation in Bible times and today do not include all of the land God promised.
• The scattered people will return to Jerusalem to live completely submitted to the rule of their amazing king. 
• The world peace that everyone says they long for, but does little to achieve, will finally be real and eternal. More than peace it will be shalom, Greater than just the absence of conflict, everything will work together in perfect harmony as creation is made whole.

Our king has gone on a long journey, before he left he gave us resources to be used to help others find their way in, when he returns we need to be prepared to give an account for how we used our blessings, our skills and our time for his pleasure. (Matthew 25:14-30)

God has made it clear that we must submit to his son, we must see our need for Jesus before we die or before his return, don't discount the opportunity to transfer your citizenship to the kingdom of God. 

Will you remain in the kingdom of darkness that leads to destruction or will you renounce your citizenship there and move to the kingdom of God that will last for eternity? (Luke 13:22-30, Colossians 1:13-14)

Saved By God’s Mighty Power

The power to save us from bondage if we will submit to his control.

Exodus 7:3-5  But I will make Pharaoh’s heart stubborn so I can multiply my miraculous signs and wonders in the land of Egypt.  4  Even then Pharaoh will refuse to listen to you. So I will bring down my fist on Egypt. Then I will rescue my forces—my people, the Israelites—from the land of Egypt with great acts of judgment.  5  When I raise my powerful hand and bring out the Israelites, the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD.”

Exodus 7:10-13 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did what the LORD had commanded them. Aaron threw down his staff before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent! 

11 Then Pharaoh called in his own wise men and sorcerers, and these Egyptian magicians did the same thing with their magic. 12 They threw down their staffs, which also became serpents! But then Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs.

13 Pharaoh’s heart, however, remained hard. He still refused to listen, just as the LORD had predicted.

Moses' call to serve God required a lot of perseverance, he had opposition from the world and also from God's people that he was called to help, but the opposition is only going to get worse as Moses returns to meet with Pharaoh over and over again.

Pharaoh would receive a greater revelation of God with each plague that was coming but Pharaoh wasn't the only person that needed to learn more about God and how to please him. God's chosen people needed to learn about God as well, they had already embraced the false gods of Egypt even as the one true God was working to secure their freedom. (Joshua 24:14, Ezekiel 20:7-8)

Through the encounters that Moses had with Pharaoh, God showed the whole world that he is the only all powerful God that was superior to the overwhelming number of deities that were worshiped in Egypt. Even Pharaoh was considered to be a god so it's no wonder that he had a difficult time dealing with the truth.

The plagues should have been a wakeup call for everybody, think about it, God announced what would happen, he said precisely when it would start and when it would stop happening and yet they wouldn't acknowledge that he was in control.

Man has been consistent with his rebellion against God from the start of world history. From the Garden of Eden, to the conditions that led to the flood, the Tower of Babel, it just doesn't stop despite all of the proof that points to the real God who is all powerful, all knowing and completely in control of every situation.

Exodus 5:2 “Is that so?” retorted Pharaoh. “And who is the LORD? Why should I listen to him and let Israel go? I don’t know the LORD, and I will not let Israel go.” 

God will soon answer his question but Pharaoh won't accept it, instead of allowing the Israelites to leave with Egypt unharmed, he forces the slaves to stay and causes the destruction of his country and the misery of all of his people. 

At first Pharaoh wasn't impressed because his magicians could counterfeit the real deal but as the plagues continue we see that Satan's counterfeits don't stand a chance. Warren Wiersbe's Old Testament Commentary says that Satan always has inferior counterfeits that he uses to deceive the world:

• Satan counterfeits the works of God (2 Tim. 3:8)
• Satan counterfeits the children of God (Matt. 13:24-30, 36-43 / 2 Cor. 11:26)
• Satan counterfeits the gospel (Gal. 1:6-9)
• Satan counterfeits true righteousness (Rom. 10:1-3)
• Satan counterfeits ministers who spread his lies (2 Cor. 11:13-15)
• Satan counterfeits Christ (2 Thess. 2:1-12)

God made it obvious to everyone that the powers of darkness were not powerful enough and they were not in control. After they are free from slavery, Moses encourages God's people to recall the miraculous work that God had accomplished for his chosen people, they have plenty of proof that there is one God that deserves our worship and every other god is a counterfeit.

Deuteronomy 4:32-34  “Now search all of history, from the time God created people on the earth until now, and search from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything as great as this ever been seen or heard before?

33  Has any nation ever heard the voice of God speaking from fire—as you did—and survived?  34  Has any other god dared to take a nation for himself out of another nation by means of trials, miraculous signs, wonders, war, a strong hand, a powerful arm, and terrifying acts?

Yet that is what the LORD your God did for you in Egypt, right before your eyes.

What has God done to show you favor? Have you been freed from slavery? If you are not a child of God then you are in bondage to the death penalty that is required to atone for your sin. But thankfully that isn't where God leaves us! The same all powerful God that is your judge is also the provider of your pardon.

Exodus 9:1 This is what the LORD, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go, so they can worship me.

The day is coming when God's people will be freed from this world of sin to worship him for eternity. Everyone that thought that they were in control of their destiny will be left behind to face God's judgment through the events that Revelation tells us about. God will prove himself to mankind again but just like Pharaoh they will refuse to repent. (Revelation 6:15-17; 9:20,21; 16:9,11)

Thank you Lord for revealing your mighty power to save so that I can know how to escape your mighty power to judge. Help me to give up my throne and submit completely to your control.

Who Am I

Part of the good news of the Bible is that I don't have to be a somebody in any way in order to be used for God's plans. The Bible proves to me over and over again that God isn't partial to people that have it all together or those that are well trained for a task.

In the previous blog post from the book of Exodus we saw that Moses became an ordinary man with nothing to offer before he was called by God to lead his people. God didn't care about his trophies or his list of credentials that he got through his worldly education in the palace of Pharaoh.

The Unqualified Get Called

Who am I that somebody so incredible, powerful and righteous would care about me and desire to be intimate with me? I pray that I will never get over the awesome wonder that God would treat me so well when I deserve nothing from him.

The Unqualified Get Called

Moses had to become an ordinary man before God called him to the extraordinary.

Exodus 3:9-10 Look! The cry of the people of Israel has reached me, and I have seen how harshly the Egyptians abuse them. 10 Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh. You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt.”

11 But Moses protested to God, “Who am I to appear before Pharaoh? Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?”

What a huge disappointment Moses parents must have felt as they heard the news that their son was a fugitive. Moses life had such a miraculous start and his parents must have been so hopeful that God was going to use Moses to do something great for their people. But all of those expectations have faded away since Moses was forced to flee to the wilderness to get away from Pharaoh.

Moses was trying to do God's will but he was trying to do it in his own strength and his own timetable. Moses learned the hard way that our skills and talents won't help us do God's will before God is ready. Moses found out that our strengths can be our greatest weakness when we use them outside of God's will.

If Moses had an thoughts earlier in life that he was saved from being killed by the Egyptians so that he could accomplish something great for God then he has probably given up on those great ideas. God hasn't done anything with him for 80 years, the strength of his youth is gone as well as his status and position in Pharaoh's government, and now it seems like God isn't even talking to him. Everything was going his way but now it is all gone until God is ready.

The Great "I Am" Calls The Great "I Am Not"

God Says: 

1. Go. The waiting is about to end, it is now time to act on the injustice that was bothering you before when you killed the Egyptian.

2. "I Am" is sending you. No more acting out of his own strength and wisdom.

3. You must lead. The called have a difficult time resisting the call, the urgency will overwhelm them.

4. My people. God loves the people more than Moses and he could have saved his people without using Moses.

Moses Says:

1. I am unworthy, but God already knew that, none of us are. (Genesis 3:11-12)

2. I don't have enough knowledge, but you don't need to be when God knows everything. (Genesis 3:13-22) 

3. I am not powerful, but you don't need to be when the power of God is your strength. (Genesis 4:1-9) 

4. I am not an eloquent speaker, but you haven't had any problem talking to God, so why can't you speak to Pharaoh? (Genesis 4:10-17) 

Moses was ready to do something dangerous before he had God on his side working for him but now that he has God on his side he is concerned about his safety and the success of his mission. He is so stubborn about not serving God that he begins to lie about himself in order to get God to leave him alone. (Compare Exodus 4:10 with Acts 7:22)

Exodus 4:13-14 But Moses again pleaded, “Lord, please! Send anyone else.” 14 Then the LORD became angry with Moses.

Moses wisdom and his feelings told him the opposite of what God was saying, the outcome of God's plans did not depend on Moses abilities but on God's willingness to operate through him, he wasn't operating like someone whose success was guaranteed by almighty God.

Moses became an ordinary man with nothing to offer before he was called by God to lead his people. God doesn't care about my trophies or my list of credentials, he may allow me to be successful in ministry without his power but how much more could be done with it?

Thank you Lord for being faithful to your promises even when it seems like you allow me to live in the wilderness.
