Jesus Death - Lenten Bible Readings

This moment in history should greatly impact your life.

Matthew 27:45-54  From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).

47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.” 48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink.

49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.

51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!” .

After all of the cruel physical abuse and torture, now comes the ultimate sorrow, the moment that God turned his back on his son. We usually focus on all of the physical hardship but can you imagine being separated from God?  That is something that I don't have to ever do, thanks to Jesus!

Jesus became my High Priest! He gave me direct access to God and he made it crystal clear by tearing the curtain in two. Imagine how hardened the hearts of the Pharisees had to be for them to have a new curtain installed in the temple, what were they thinking?

Hebrews 6:19-20  This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. Jesus has already gone in there for us. He has become our eternal High Priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Next thing you know there is an earthquake which makes an opening for a bunch of dead people to walk around! Is there any wonder that people saw all of the events that occurred and came to the conclusion that Jesus was God's son? Jesus impressed the people of his day through his death, shouldn't we take notice of the importance of this event and realize how significant it is for our life.

Thank you Lord for going through such agony and torture for me and saving my soul!
