A New Branch Is Promised

Chopping down the tree for a brand new start

Isaiah 11:1–5  Out of the stump of David’s family will grow a shoot, yes, a new Branch bearing fruit from the old root.

2 And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

3 He will delight in obeying the Lord. He will not judge by appearance nor make a decision based on hearsay.

4 He will give justice to the poor and make fair decisions for the exploited. The earth will shake at the force of his word, and one breath from his mouth will destroy the wicked.

5 He will wear righteousness like a belt and truth like an undergarment.

I love to use the pruning shears in my garden, you cut off worn out, ugly branches and in exchange you get bright new branches, it is like getting a new plant for free. God also likes a fresh new start, in the Book of Isaiah, he describes judgement as a cutting down of trees (Isaiah 6:13; 10:33-34).

The tree was chopped down because it was producing bad fruit, the lineage of David was marred by adultery, murder and idol worship, that's just a few of the reasons that God took out his axe. A new start was what God wanted, the same tree root but a whole new branch, a branch that has a different character.

A new King will come from the lineage of David

Acts 13:22-23  But God removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, "I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do."  And it is one of King David’s descendants, Jesus, who is God’s promised Savior of Israel!
The Spirit of the Lord will be on the new king, he will be a fair judge, full of wisdom and he will be powerful to save. He will be the ruler with integrity that Israel has longed for ever since God granted their request for a king, he will be the king that the lineage of David could not supply.

God will judge his people, they will not get away with disobedience for too long before he deals with them. God's purpose will prevail and if he has to chop down a tree and start over because his people are misbehaving then he will.

Thank you for judging us fairly and treating us far better than we deserve. Thank you for giving us a Savior that can save us from our sinful ways.
