How Great Thou Art

Then sings my soul, my savior God to thee, How great thou art!

O Lord, my God
When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
Then sings my soul,my savior God, to thee,
How great thou art, how great thou art

When through the woods, and forest glades i wander,
And hear birds sing sweetly in the trees
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And see the brook, and feel the gentle breeze
Then sings my soul,my savior God, to thee,
How great thou art, how great thou art

It is well
It is well
With my soul
With my soul
It is well
It is well
With my soul

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow with humble adoration,
And then proclaim, My God, how great thou art!
Psalm 145:1-7  I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever. I will Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power.

I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles. Your awe-inspiring deeds will be on every tongue;

I will proclaim your greatness. Everyone will share the story of your wonderful goodness; they will sing with joy about your righteousness.

Peter On Trial

Peter's denial happened because he wasn't ready for his trial by the fire.

John 18:15-18 Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another of the disciples. That other disciple was acquainted with the high priest, so he was allowed to enter the high priest's courtyard with Jesus. 16 Peter had to stay outside the gate.

Then the disciple who knew the high priest spoke to the woman watching at the gate, and she let Peter in. 17 The woman asked Peter, "You're not one of that man's disciples, are you?" "No," he said, "I am not." 18 Because it was cold, the household servants and the guards had made a charcoal fire. They stood around it, warming themselves, and Peter stood with them, warming himself.

John 18:25-27 Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked Him again, "You're not one of His disciples, are you?" He denied it, saying, "No, I am not." 26 But one of the household slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, "Didn't I see you out there in the olive grove with Jesus?" 27 Again Peter denied it. And immediately a rooster crowed.

Peter was in the wrong place at the wrong time, if he truly wanted to make good on the promise that he would never deny Jesus, then he should have been hiding with the other disciples. Maybe Peter felt that hiding out in itself was a form of denial and that would also be a betrayal of his best friend.

Peter did not realize that Jesus was not the only man on trial that night, while Peter was being questioned and as he was answering in fear, his best friend was just the opposite.

Jesus was in control of His situation, He was being questioned but He was answering the questions with one hundred percent calm, He knew that the cup of God's wrath was about to be poured out and He was willingly going to take it.
Matthew 26:40-41 Then He returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, "Couldn't you watch with Me even one hour? Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!"
It was a cool night and the fire seemed like a good place to be but Peter did not prepare for his trial by the fire, earlier he was sleeping as Jesus was preparing for His trial with praying, the interrogation that Peter would encounter would prove that his love and courage would not be enough to remain loyal to Jesus.
Luke 22:33 Peter said, "Lord, I am ready to go to prison with You, and even to die with You."
Peter's trial began with the servant girl asking the first question. If he was going to be successful at living up to his promise then this should prove to be the easiest questioner for him to handle but instead he fails right away. Two more times Peter would be questioned and each time he would get more anxious and frustrated while Jesus was calmly answered his interrogators.
Isaiah 53:3 He was despised and rejected--a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on Him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.
Others in the circle around the fire took up the same question and one by one they began to ask. The third question came from one of Malchus’ relatives! This man had gotten a good look at Peter because he was probably standing with Malchus when he was injured by Peter.

On the third time Peter swore with an oath that he wasn't one of Jesus disciples and then the rooster crowed to remind Peter that he had done what Jesus had predicted. I cannot imagine the thoughts that went through Peter's head as his heart sank when Jesus looked him in the eye.
It is worthwhile to contrast Peter and Judas. Peter wept over his sins and repented, while Judas admitted his sins but never really repented. Judas experienced remorse, not repentance. When Judas went out from the Upper Room, “it was night” but when Peter went out to weep bitterly, there was the dawning of a new day.
- Warren Weirsbe
Peter failed while he was on trial but thankfully Peter’s failure isn't the end of his story. Peter would be restored and would be filled with the Holy Spirit to give him wisdom and strength to lead the early church.

I need to remember:

  • Self-confidence and lack of prayer is a good way to fail when I am on trial.
  • Making promises to God that are outside of His plans is useless.
  • Making promises within His will without relying on His strength is also useless.
Thank you Lord for your grace that offers me second chances. I have failed miserably when I have been tried by the fire. Help me to rely on your strength to do what you have chosen for me to do.

Better

God is in control so you know it will get better.

Video: Hezekiah Walker "Better"

People come, People go
Your life has been
Out of control
You're confused
Don't worry your soul

It will get better
Better
It will get better
Better
It will get better
God is in control

Find your praise
Within your heart
Hold it close
Don't ever depart
It gets cold in the night
But you'll be alright

Whatever state I find myself in
I learned how to be secure
Knowing that God
Will supply all my needs
And He'll work things out for my good

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

The Cup

Are you holding a sword in rebellion or are you submitting to the cup?

John 18:11-12 But Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given Me?" 12 So the soldiers, their commanding officer, and the Temple guards arrested Jesus and tied Him up.

Matthew 26:39-42 He went on a little farther and bowed with His face to the ground, praying, "My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from Me. Yet I want Your will to be done, not Mine." 40 Then He returned to the disciples and found them asleep. He said to Peter, "Couldn't you watch with Me even one hour? 41 Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!" 42 Then Jesus left them a second time and prayed, "My Father! If this cup cannot be taken away unless I drink it, Your will be done."

The early hours of Jesus last morning in the garden were incredibly stressful for everybody involved. Jesus suffering was by far the greatest, he had agonized over what was going to come when Judas came to the garden to give the guards the hypocritical signal (The Kiss) to point out which man was to be arrested.

No doubt the disciples had a lot going on in their heads, from the Lord's Supper just a few hours ago up to this time, their world was being turned upside down and they didn't have any control. As always Peter attempted to have some control, so he took the sword out that he had been carrying and tried to fight back to keep all of this from happening.

While Peter was holding the sword our Savior was reaching out to take a cup, while Peter was rebelling against God's plans Jesus was submitting to the plan. Peter wanted to protect Jesus and keep him from the cup of God's wrath but Jesus was taking the cup for our own protection.

The wrath of God, and punishment due for my sin is in that cup, it is a cup that I could never drink from and live, the only man that could do that for me was Jesus. Earlier Jesus asked the Father to take the cup away but now he is willing to take it, earlier he had agonized with the thought of the cup that he was to drink from, but now he Jesus was willing to take the cup of God's wrath. (Matthew 26:36-42)

Jesus attitude toward being made sin is much different that our attitude toward our sinful state. He was deeply pained by the effect of sin whereas we tend to enjoy our sin or at least we don't mind it very much.
Mark 10:37-40 They replied, "When You sit on Your glorious throne, we want to sit in places of honor next to You, one on Your right and the other on Your left." 38 But Jesus said to them, "You don't know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink? Are you able to be baptized with the baptism of suffering I must be baptized with?"

39 "Oh yes," they replied, "we are able!" Then Jesus told them, "You will indeed drink from My bitter cup and be baptized with My baptism of suffering. 40 But I have no right to say who will sit on My right or My left. God has prepared those places for the ones He has chosen."
We will all have to take a cup and suffer in this world. Jesus was able to accept the cup as an example to us in how to view our difficult yet much lighter afflictions. I can choose to oppose the Father's will as Peter did or I can trust his love and his plans and accept his will even when it looks too unpleasant.
2 Corinthians 4:17-18 For our present troubles are small and won't last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! 18 So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.
Thank you Lord for accepting the cup that the Father planned for you to take in my place. You have taught me that I don't need to fear the cup that the Father has prepared for me. I know that he will not allow me to be overcome by the pain, suffering and heartbreak that I will experience in this world.

The Sword

We need to use the correct weapon and use it correctly.

John 18:10-11 Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest's slave. 11 But Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given Me?"

The quiet of the night in the garden of Gethsemane was usually a good place for praying and sleeping. The disciples have probably spent plenty of nights in this garden asleep while Jesus is busy praying. Again tonight the disciples are busy sleeping as Jesus is praying and they are clueless about the anxiety and extreme sorrow that Jesus is experiencing as he prays. (Mark 14:32-36)

The eleven guys taking a nap are suddenly woke up as Jesus rebukes them for failing to pray and then before they can finish waking up the silence is broken by a mob. The quiet gives way to confusion as they try to wake up and comprehend what is going on. The disciples have been through a lot this evening and they must be asking themselves "what now?"

They watch as Judas steps up, that's no reason for concern since they thought that he is still one of them, but why are so many people with him. Judas came closer to Jesus and kissed him just as any disciple would greet his rabbi and then the chaos really begins to escalate. The kiss was the beginning of the violence that Jesus had been telling them about.

The Rebellious Sword

Peter was always one to take action, even if it was the wrong action, he realizes that Jesus prediction was about to come true if he didn't do something to stop it. It doesn't make sense to us that Peter would retaliate against such a large crowd but Jesus is the best thing that has ever happened in his life and he was in a desperate situation to hold on to what he loved.

The sword that Peter used represents rebellion against the will of God. Peter should have known that Jesus would be arrested and that He would willingly surrender to His enemies even if the enemy was laying on the ground. (John 18:5-6) Jesus has already tried to teach Peter this lesson just a few days before the Transfiguration. Peter was  in a dangerous situation going against God's plan and purpose. (Matthew 16:21-23)
Peter made every mistake possible! He fought the wrong enemy, used the wrong weapon, had the wrong motive, and accomplished the wrong result! He was openly resisting the will of God and hindering the work that Jesus came to accomplish.
When we think of rebellion the Apostle Paul usually comes to mind but Peter was ahead of Paul. Peter argued with Jesus on more than one occasion about Jesus death and he sought to fight against God's plan by taking up the sword. Peter could have been executed for his actions against Malchus but Jesus fixed the damage so that Peter would live on to do battle another day with a different sword. (John 17:12)

The Spiritual Sword

The proper sword for God’s servants to use in fighting their spiritual battles is the sword of the spirit. (Hebrews 4:12; Ephesians 6:17) The truth of God's Word is our weapon of choice, if we choose to use the wrong sword then we will fail miserably.

If Eve had stuck to God's Word back in the garden instead of reasoning about what it really meant then she would have been victorious just as Jesus was when he used God's Word against Satan. (Matthew 4:4-10)
2 Corinthians 10:3-4 We are human, but we don't wage war as humans do. We use God's mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments.
Jesus doesn't want us to use worldly weapons to fight spiritual battles, it doesn't make sense to use inferior weapons and tools to fight against such a strong adversary. Don't let Satan trick you into believing that he has better weapons or that his plans are better than God's plan and purpose for us.

I need to be vigilant in Bible study so that I will be aligned with God's plans and purpose for the events in my life. If I rebel and take up the wrong sword then I will suffer great harm. My Bible study time should make me a better soldier by purifying me and by training me to use the sword of God's word against Satan.

The Kiss

The extreme hypocrisy and deceit of Judas kiss.

John 18:4-9 Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to Him, so He stepped forward to meet them. "Who are you looking for?" He asked. 5 "Jesus the Nazarene," they replied. "I AM He," Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed Him, was standing with them.) 6 As Jesus said "I AM He," they all drew back and fell to the ground! 7 Once more He asked them, "Who are you looking for?" And again they replied, "Jesus the Nazarene." 8 "I told you that I AM He," Jesus said. "And since I am the One you want, let these others go." 9 He did this to fulfill His own statement: "I did not lose a single one of those You have given Me."

Luke 22:48 But Jesus said, "Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"

Jesus is in the garden praying as he waits for the betrayer to make his way there. He knows that he is coming and that his time is near, Jesus knew that stepping into Gethsemane was the first in a series of events that would lead to his trial and crucifixion.

The only one of the twelve that isn't in the garden is Judas but he will be there soon. For Judas it is time to stop wasting his life living a lie and deceiving the other eleven men in his small group. Those eleven guys are going to be in complete shock, none of them had any clue about what was in Judas' heart, none of them had a good reason to suspect Judas and they didn't even get it when Jesus told them in the Upper Room.

The guards were unnecessary!

Judas proves that he doesn't really know Jesus as he enters the garden with a large group of temple guards. (Matthew 26:55) There wasn't any resistance, the Shepherd willingly and boldly lay down his life for his sheep, the crowd could have been much smaller and they certainly could have left their torches and weapons at home.

Did Judas think they were going to have to search the garden or fight the other disciples? Did he think that Jesus was going to make a miraculous escape like he had done before? Would any number of soldiers make a difference if Jesus choose to get away?

The kiss was unnecessary!

Nobody would think anything was wrong when Judas walked up and gave Jesus a kiss. It was common practice in their culture for a Rabbi to be greeted with a kiss as a sign of love and devotion but that was not the purpose of this kiss.

Even in the dark there wasn't any problem identifying Jesus, he didn't resist or hide but instead he calmly declared who he was and surrendered to them, there wasn't any chance that they would get the wrong guy.
Psalms 27:6 Wounds from a sincere friend are better than many kisses from an enemy.
The extreme hypocrisy of the kiss is amazing. The deep emotions and loyalty that is felt between people that kiss is so opposite the intentions of Judas. The deceit is reminiscent of the trickery that occurred back in another garden. That snake that betrayed man in the Garden of Eden is at work in Gethsemane and will continue until God makes him stop forever.
Isaiah 53:3 He was despised and rejected, a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care.
It is easier to betray Jesus than we like to admit When we pretend to know and love the Lord and choose our own way we are betraying the closest friend that we could ever have. If your attitude toward Jesus is wrong, if you feel like he isn't treating you fair or if you fail to live up to your Sunday morning promises later in the week then you are betraying Jesus.

Judas proves that we can be busy in ministry and in small group and even have the best Bible teacher but it is not enough if it doesn't change your heart. Judas shows us that the desire for personal pleasure and financial gain can lead us to question Jesus and compromise our love for him.

Why? By Michael Card
Why did it have to be a friend
Who chose to betray the Lord
Why did he use a kiss to show them
That's not what a kiss is for
Only a friend can betray a friend
A stranger has nothing to gain
And only a friend comes close enough
To ever cause so much pain

The Garden

The first garden is a story of disobedience but Gethsemane is all about obedience.

John 18:1-6 After saying these things, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley with His disciples and entered a grove of olive trees. 2 Judas, the betrayer, knew this place, because Jesus had often gone there with His disciples. 3 The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.

4 Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to Him, so He stepped forward to meet them. "Who are you looking for?" He asked. 5 "Jesus the Nazarene," they replied. "I AM He," Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed Him, was standing with them.) 6 As Jesus said "I AM He," they all drew back and fell to the ground!

It must have been getting towards midnight by the time Jesus and his disciples reached the Garden of Gethsemane. Thousands of Passover pilgrims were sound asleep, weary from their trip to Jerusalem, and unaware of the spiritual battle taking place.

The excitement and joy that always accompanied Passover was lost on the disciples this time around as they continue to process all of the things that have happened since supper last night. They still cannot believe that Jesus washed their feet like a servant should have done and they still don't have any idea why Judas is missing. It seems so ridiculous now that they were arguing about their rank in Jesus' kingdom. (Luke 22:24)

They probably felt some comfort when they realized that Jesus was heading to the garden where they had already spent many nights with him. Jesus didn't feel the same comfort, he knew what was about to take place, still he walks on. Stepping into the garden where the betrayer would show himself and start a chain of events that would lead to his death was an act of obedience.

Gardens have a special place in history, in the beginning the first battle with sin was in a beautiful garden where the first Adam failed and now in a garden that is scarred by sin the second Adam steps into the garden ready for the battle that would change the world.
Mark 14:34 He told them, "My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with Me."
Jesus took on the physical suffering and also the agony of the weight of every sin. We cannot imagine the experience that Jesus had as the sinless one became sin for us and experienced the separation from God that we all experienced before we became God's child.

There is another beautiful garden experience that is on the way for the children of God! It will be more glorious than the first garden and we will never have to leave!

In this new garden there will not be any sin, crying, sadness or death. The river flowing through this garden will flow forever and the tree of life will produce everlasting fruit. The glory of God will be fully revealed to us there!

I cannot wait to get to that garden! I have been in the garden of disobedience (Eden) and I have been in the garden of betrayal (Gethsemane). I cannot wait to go to the better garden heaven and experience God's presence for eternity.

Be Glorified

The ultimate purpose for everything is to reveal God's glory.

My previous post in the Book of John study was about "Doing God's Will." It is clear from that study that God has a plan for our lives, a plan that will probably scare us, yet it is a plan that we still should be willing to follow. The plans that God has for my life and for everybody else is for his glory.

The normal focus of man is always to glorify himself, it is natural for us to make plans and keep busy doing things that will bring glory to ourselves, go to any school graduation and you will only hear people talking about making yourself great and making a name for yourself.

Man was made to rely on God and give him glory but we quickly got sidetracked. The rebellion in the garden was an attempt by the first two humans to become like God and seek to bring glory for himself. Just a little bit later on the population has grown and so has man's rebellion, their desire brought them together to build a great tower in an attempt to make a name for themselves. (Genesis 11:4)

God's glory was the focus of Jesus life, in this prayer we can see that Jesus received glory as a result of his work here on earth, he receives glory from his children and he receives glory as we accomplish the work that he has given us.

The Evidence Brings Glory To Jesus

John 16:6-8 "I have revealed You to the ones You gave Me from this world. They were always Yours. You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. Now they know that everything I have is a gift from You, for I have passed on to them the message You gave Me. They accepted it and know that I came from You, and they believe You sent Me.
The amount of evidence that proves that Jesus wasn't just another guy claiming to be the Messiah is overwhelming.
  • Nobody else has ever in born in just the right circumstances that it caused him to fulfill hundreds of prophesies.
  • Nobody else has ever claimed to be God and shown such incredible control over nature.
  • Nobody else has ever shown us that he could take command of the spirit world and cause demons to run scared as they proclaim that Jesus is God.
  • Nobody else has ever predicted that he would return from the grave and then make it happen.
Although most people did not believe in Jesus that isn't any reason to join them. The disciples spent their time weighing the evidence and they were convinced. Jesus work on earth made it clear that he was more than just a man. (John 14:11)

Jesus tells us in his prayer that he was sent from God with a message (John 17:8, 13). The question that we must face is what will you do with the message? Will you give God glory for revealing himself through Jesus ministry?

The People Bring Glory To Jesus

John 17:9-11, 15-18 "My prayer is not for the world, but for those You have given Me, because they belong to You. 10 All who are Mine belong to You, and You have given them to Me, so they bring Me glory. 11 Now I am departing from the world; they are staying in this world, but I am coming to You. Holy Father, You have given Me Your name; now protect them by the power of Your name so that they will be united just as We are.

15 I'm not asking You to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to this world any more than I do. 17 Make them holy by Your truth; teach them Your word, which is truth. 18 Just as You sent Me into the world, I am sending them into the world.
The next part of Jesus prayer is for his disciples, the elect that have been chosen to glorify God and make his glory seen in our lives. God's children can help this blind world to see his glory through us. Our lifestyle and our dependence on him should make his value know to the world.

Instead of taking us out of this world he leaves us here as a testimony to God's glorious work in our life. As he works in our lives his glory is displayed for the rest of the world to see.

Their Work Brings Glory To Jesus

John 17:21-23 I pray that they will all be one, just as You and I are one--as You are in Me, Father, and I am in You. And may they be in Us so that the world will believe You sent Me. 22 "I have given them the glory You gave Me, so they may be one as We are one. 23 I am in them and You are in Me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that You sent Me and that You love them as much as You love Me.
Unity of purpose in the body of Christ brings him glory and it gets the most accomplished for the kingdom. Jesus says that his followers are being sent into the world similar to the way that God sent him into the world. Our work for the kingdom will reveal God's glory as we set aside our agenda and live to pursue his work that he has entrusted to us., we need to be as aware and diligent about completing our work as Jesus was. (John 17:18, Matthew 28:18-20)

The Father and the Son have mutual agendas and interests and nobody is seeking to go their own way. That is the kind of unity that we should have in the body of Christ instead of the struggle that so many of us have to get things our way.

Our God is very relational and wants to be known, that is his purpose for creating, that is the reason he is still involved in what happens everyday in his creation. We will see his glory as we get to know him better.

When we live holy lives and display the fruit of the Spirit, when the world sees us trusting God for the unknown and when they see our contentment to live for him then Jesus receives glory.

When we testify about his goodness, when we use up our vacation time for mission trips, and when we do it all with great joy that could only come from Jesus, that's when he gets the glory.

I am thankful that I have seen the glory of Jesus through the scriptures and through the lives of his followers! I need to join the work of making God's glory know so that others will come to know and love him.
