Immanuel

God with us!

Isaiah 7:14  All right then, the Lord Himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a Child! She will give birth to a Son and will call Him Immanuel (which means 'God is with us').

Can you say that God is with you? Adam and Eve could say that God was with them, Noah, Abraham, Moses and Joseph could say that God was with them but lately the children of God had strayed very far away from him and they were nowhere close to God.

God blessed his people through the leadership of King David but at this point in history they were not keeping their end of the covenant that they made with God.

This passage in Isaiah was a prophecy to the king of Judah that God would protect him from the attacks of Israel and Syria. King Ahaz was not trusting God to take care of him and his country so God told him to ask for a sign.

God told King Ahaz that before a virgin could get married, conceive, and rear a son to age two, those kings would no longer be an issue. In less than three years this prophecy came true, the Assyrians conquered Damascus and Samaria, removing the threats to Judah. This prophecy, like many of them, has a double fulfillment. It had a short term meaning for the original recipients as well as a long term message for us.

Who are we, That You would be mindful of us, What do You see, That's worth looking our way.
If you realize your spiritual condition then it will be mind boggling to you that God would want to be Immanuel (God with us). We walk away from him and go our own way just like God's children in the Old Testament did. Yet he still wants to have a relationship and spend time with us. (Isaiah 53:6, Psalm 16:11)

Thank you Lord for wanting to have a relationship with me and going so far over the top to make it available to me. Without you my life would have no meaning.
